Verso publishes one issue a year. Each edition is a physical argument for slowness, and the art direction has to justify the wait.
The challenge
What stood in the way
Long-form design writing rarely gets read. The layout had to carry the reader through nine thousand words without a single pull quote gimmick.

The approach
How the work was made
We built a two-column rhythm with an unusually wide gutter, then let display letterforms bleed off the page as navigation rather than decoration.
Design direction
The language we committed to
Gold foil on uncoated black stock, a single serif at two extreme sizes, and no photography inside the essay wells.

Final outcome
Where it landed
A 148-page annual that sold through its first print run in eleven days.
